I admire your level of debate.J50 wrote:A hint of sarcasm, yes, regarding an irrelevant comment. The original comments about the exam papers were merely to illustrate the theory about stretching a child (to a degree) in maths and how this could have a positive impact on results in the relatively easier exam. The example of factorials only served to illustrate this thought and the exam paper perhaps show how should a question could come up about a higher level topic, the ability to answer the question might be enhanced by at least recognising the subject matter. Obviously it wasn't from a Tiffins paper, just some random one I found in order to make the hazy days of summer feel even longer.
Uninterestingly, they didn't call it factorial at my school, they called it 'Bang' which made n!/(n-r)!r! much easier to say and remember.
I just tested him on the concept again as it has been a while since that car journey full of 'Bangs', and he seems to have retained the information which is good.
Right, back to the Hobbit now in order to brush up on those tricky maths questions...
Seize the day ... before it seizes you.

At the school I attended we used the term "pling". "bang" had a different meaning.J50 wrote:Uninterestingly, they didn't call it factorial at my school, they called it 'Bang' which made n!/(n-r)!r! much easier to say and remember.

Part 2 of MGS Paper is much harder than normal and is used to decide scholarship offers as it is not expected that all candidates can or will be able to do those questions. It is there to help schools decide who should be awarded a scholarship and how much.
Also most private schools have their exams in January, a good 4 - 5 months after the GS so most children are more mature and have had more time to practise for these exams.
I feel those papers are excellent to stretch able children and also to teach older children as most of these do require a great degree of lateral thinking. The maths behind most is simple but understanding the questions and applying your knowledge are the main skills required

Received my copy of 11+ super selective maths - have been looking for this kind of thing for sometime - more abstract, lateral thinking question types at Level 6 or thereabouts. Kids will need secure grasp of the basics and will have to put their thinking caps on.
These kinds of questions certainly do come up - there are always 1 or 2 stretch/challenge questions, judging by various past papers. If anyone knows of other practice resources/workbooks with similar kinds of questions would be interested in finding out. Otherwise it's a question of wading through lots and lots of past papers in order to find them
btw have definitely seen a factorials question come up on an 11+/independent school past paper before - can't quite recall which one though - will let you know if I spot it again.

Sorry not to reply sooner, have been busy lately and travelling a lot. I was thinking for instance about spgs 11+ maths papers that from memory seem to incorporate these kinds of lateral thinking question types towards the end of the papers (Section C).SunlampVexesEel wrote:Where?
