Just take your DC to the local library and let them choose what they want to read.

While you're at the library you could enrol your child in this year's Summer Reading Challenge, which my two used to always love doing every year. They read and comment on a certain number of books of their choice, and gain stickers and a medal (or similar) along the way. At the beginning of the Autumn term all the children who took part get their names read out in school assembly and get a certificate. That's what happened in our borough anyway!

2. The Thirteen Treasures by Michelle Harrison
3. Born to Run by Michael Morpungo
4. Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz
5. The Silver Sword by Ian Serrallier

DS (13) read all of the Carnegie short list as part of his school's shadowing group and thought they were all vey good. And the Guardian has just released its children's fiction prize short list and he and DD (10) are working their way through that.

But there's no better way than letting them loose in the Library - especially if you're lucky enough to have a children's librarian or someone with an interest working there.
