Little mistakes

Hello, looking for any help/ advice .. My son can hit 90%- 100 %
Doing maths papers, but is often let down with little mistakes,
Mainly due to not reading the question properly for example cm
Not mm or pence not £ , missing out numbers in addition. I have
Tried To emphasise importance of reading the question, tried to offer
Incentives, but it seems to happen more as we get closer to
The exam. Any one with the same problem? / advice on tactics
It is frustrating to see him make mistakes when I know he is
Capable of answering correctly

Because of the way standardisation works, and the fact that in general year 5/6 children do better in maths than in English so that the average mark is higher, the English paper will matter far more than the maths paper in terms of the last couple of marks. There will be lots of children in the 86-100% range for maths, so if you are in that range I suspect my strategy would be to ensure that you can score as well as that in English.

Same problem here. I found that the silly mistakes are worse with a standard paper. Try multiple choice papers.

Also, the second stage exams for Sutton Boys GS , the English can be quite a challenge and they carry more mark than Stage 1 tests.

Thanks for advice, looking back I remember him doing the
Same for his piano exam, learnt the pieces perfectly two
Weeks before the exam and then spent the next two
Weeks making little mistakes in the pieces. According
To his piano teacher it was a good sign!

My DD1 was like that. When questioned she said it was because she wasn't bothered about practising anymore and would read the questions properly on the day as it would be important then!!! Hence no more practising for her. She has always been like that though and hasn't changed - going into year 10 at Scgsg next week.
