Hi all
Hope you'd have received the SET results today. Second stage test will be English(extended writing task?) and Maths(standard paper).

Appreciate any suggestion specially for English, which can help to prepare for second stage?

Thanks

Sutton school States that the English paper will be a writing task. Wilson's does not mention anything.

Parents of DCs who sat the Wilson's test last year, could you please give us a clue as to what was asked in the English paper last year?

Thanks.

Maths: The questions will be wordy problems and will probably also include at least one problem on geometry (eg tiling a swimming pool) and one on data (averages, range etc). Often there appears to be a basic probability one. Manchester grammar papers are good practice for the wordy problems. Make sure that your child has it drummed into them that there are marks for showing workings!

English: Wilson's has been a single piece of writing for 50-55 minutes. The moderators do not want us to reveal details of previous papers. However the format hitherto has been a response to information given. So for example you might be given a page from a holiday brochure, and based on that you would be asked to a diary for a day. Or given plans for a news shopping centre and asked to write a letter to your councillor as to why you object to the plans. It is important to use the correct format and appropriate language for your audience, so at this point I would be practicing a piece every night (or possibly every other night given the length) in a different style, so persuasive writing, formal letter, newspaper account, diary etc

Sutton has 2 half hour written exercises, usually one non-fiction and one more creative or descriptive.

We will know this if detailed letter is sent as well. Such details were given last year.
