As parentoftwo says - even if you use a weekly tutor, there's still a lot of DIY practice needed. A 1-3 hour weekly session with a tutor isn't enough on its own - 4-5 supervised homework sessions are also needed.
I DIY'd my son when Tiffin was just VR/NVR and that was fairly easy but he was naturally a keen worker/learner. We are tutoring my daughter as she's not as self motivated and we felt expertise is more important in teaching some aspects of English and Maths.
