It is up to 400 (200 in year 12 and slightly fewer in year 13). In practice not everyone manages to pass year 12 and get back to year 13 so a few have to leave.

I'm curious - why do you need to know how many there are in the sixth form at Tiffin (or at QE, since you asked about that on a separate thread)?

After Y11 many schools change their student body, by restricting the progress of existing students and, very often, by taking on new students. These changes mean that the Y7 intake is not a true representation of the A level results. There was an interesting recent research paper by King's (London) academics on how the new Y12 intake can significantly impact A level results.

Agree with NYR.

Also I was curious on % ( approx ) of pupil going to Oxbridge :

QE : 30/140 - 21%
St Olaves : 30/240 - 12.5%
Tiffins : 22/200 - 11%

Ofcourse Oxbridge is not the indicator of performance..in a ever changing world.

But just for some thoughts..

Cheers.

Why on earth do you think the proprotion of students going to Oxbridge is at all relevant?

Oxbridge is no longer, and perhaps never was, the place to study some degrees - there are better courses in some subjects elsewhere.

There are so many changes to GCSE and A level courses that no school's current performance can predict the future.

I'd be amazed if anyone was looking at A Level results as a guide to which schools to send their children to, particularly given that many children change schools for A Level out of choice, notwithstanding all those who are persuaded not to stay on.

GCSE results are not that reliable even, given that there's a six-year gap between you choosing the school and your child sitting the exams - so much can have changed by then, particularly in relation to senior staff. They're a useful guide as to priorities and culture of the school, and also give a good indicator of the quality of the average cohort and the subjects children can take, but that's about it, in my view.

If you're keen for your child to get to Oxbridge the real question is not "does this school have lots of Oxbridge leavers?" but "will this school be the most likely to help my own child get into Oxbridge?" Having lots of Oxbridge leavers is evidence that the school cares about such things, knows the colleges and understands the system, which is a plus, but is not evidence that all children are supported in their Oxbridge ambitions, for example, or that the school makes any particular extra efforts for borderline candidates.

But as a current thread on TSR demonstrates (one poster being obsessed with the 'prestige' of any university he would consider attending, as he thinks that this will matter when he is emigrating to somewhere more desirable than the UK  ), some people just want Oxbridge (or at a pinch Imperial), the actual degree being of secondary importance and whether or not either of those universities is regarded the most highly by any potential employer outside of Investment Banking running a very poor third ...

Why is the size of 6th form so important?

Perhaps to know how much area is available per student. At 200 per year, Tiffin is overcrowded compared to QE (140 or so).

If schools are getting a reasonable number of DCs into Oxbridge every year, the if your own DC is capable and (more importantly) they think it is the place for them, then there is no reason why the school won't be able to get them there.
Differences in % getting in doesn't really make that much difference at that level TBH.

Perhaps the one with the lower % actually advises DC on what the best course and the best institution is to do that course, regardless of whether that's Oxbridge or not.
