From the SET FAQs on the Sutton Grammar School website:

Do you make allowances for age (as in a child whose birthday is at one end of the school year)?

Yes. A standardisation for age mechanism is applied to the Selective Eligibility Test.

Does anyone know how the "standardization of age mechanism" is calculated? How many points will someone born in August be awarded compared to some of the older kids born in September?

For standardization, usual method is that children born in a particular month are compared with the children born in that month. So September born will be compared with September born and like wise August born are compared with August born.

This means that August born are not given additional points nor September born are penalized as such. It is just that those older in age are expected to and usually perform better than younger ones. As such, older have to get more raw marks to achieve same standardized score.

Have a look here at an explanation of standardisation in general and also how age standardisation works (ignore the fact that the page is from nfer, the principle is the same irrespective of publisher)
