Nonsuch high school gives any importance to arts at all?

Post by Kaybeecee »

Hi mums,
Anyone whose dd is in Nonsuch, can you please let me know what are the various extra curricular activities and clubs that are offered by Nonsuch? I checked the website and everything seems to be science and sports and music.. any other clubs which encourage and teach proper contemporary dance, art and drawing/painting, sculpting, finance studies etc?
I know for a fact that Wallington offers dance and other such activities but does Nonsuch not offer any such thing? Kindly confirm if I am missing something and if my observation is wrong. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Their website lists all the extra curricular clubs, there seem to be dancing clubs on several days for different levels. As you say, lots of sports, music and science clubs as well, but the curricular activities for arts (on their website as well) seem quite impressive.

In regards to your question "does Nonsuch give importance to arts at all?" the headmistress says in her welcome letter: Our curriculum is broad and balanced and supports our students in developing their skills in Maths, Science, the arts, language and literature, sport and dance, humanities and languages. We encourage young women in fields where they are currently under-represented and in which many of our students excel such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We also encourage creativity in thinking skills and the arts as these are important areas in the UK economy and ones in which the UK is a world leader. The humanities, English and languages develop skills of communication and analysis. Our emphasis on public speaking and debating helps our students become articulate communicators and hones their powers of persuasion. The job market requires thoughtful and talented young people whose skills are transferable and this is not the preserve of a single academic subject or group of subjects.
This school provides a wealth of enrichment opportunities beyond lessons and is proud of its long-standing House System which underpins the life of the school. It is the feeling of belonging to and having a productive place in a school community that fosters self-confidence and a positive state of mind in young people.
Nonsuch students participate fully in all that is offered to them. Music fills the school through performances by our numerous orchestras, bands, choirs, quartets, duets and soloists. Our Music department can meet the needs of the absolute beginner to the Conservatoire and Oxbridge performer. Artistic talent is further developed with a flourishing Drama department with its school productions and impromptu performances and the Art and Technology departments who host an annual Art Soiree. Sport is equally valued at Nonsuch. We have exceptional facilities including a full size sport hall, modern 25m indoor swimming pool, an astro pitch for hockey, netball and tennis courts and extensive fields for athletics, football, rounders and cricket. We have a large number of students who compete at National and International level and similarly the school itself is a Borough, Regional and National winner in many sports.

Did you get a chance to go to their open day and view the school? If your DD is after a very arts focused school then it's worth keeping in mind that Nonsuch is a school specialising in sciences and languages, so you need to decide if this focus will suit your DD.
