Backup school options in sutton for CAF

Post by care4 »

If we do not manage to get through any grammar schools in Sutton what are our backup options to fill in CAF?

We are in SM6.

Quick search suggests below for my son:

Glenthorne High School
Greenshaw
Harris Academy
Cheam High School

I guess we need to look at admissions criteria, catchment etc now for these schools to be ready to fill CAF.
More details on these schools would be much appreciated.

Also look to see when their open days/evenings are soyou can go and have a look too, if you haven’t already. Most have them during September and October.

If you can, ask about previous years’ allocations, has everyone in catchment managed to get a place in the past. If not, how far out did they allocate and see whether you are within that distance. Some schools don’t have enough spaces for all those in catchment, so they need to look at other schools.

Ultimately, ensure that when you fill in your CAF you have at least one school on there that you are very of confident of getting a place and that you are happy with. Otherwise you risk getting allocated a space at whatever School the LA can find you a place. It will probably not be one you would pick yourself and possibly some distance away.

Thanks Tinkers.

Glenthorne High School's open day is on 19th September.

Sutton Council has a useful booklet called 'Transfer to Secondary School in September 2019' that includes a table of furthest distance for entry to each school in previous years, and tells you the entry criteria for each school.

You're likely to be too far from Cheam High to get in from SM6. Also Glenthorne is heavily oversubscribed and you need to be very close to get in on distance - depending which end of SM6 you may have to rely on your child being in the top band on the banding test or achieving a high 40s score in the drama/music/dance workshops.

Also look at:
- Woodcote High School - it's just over the border in the Croydon Borough but you apply on the same distance criteria as anyone else. Fantastic sports facilities and great academically.
- Depending whether DS or DD - Carshalton Boys (we really rated this school and it was our son's 1st choice after grammars), or Carshalton Girls.
- Overton
- Stanley Park High

You may be within reach of both Harris Academies - there's one in Morden, and one that opened last week in Sutton/Belmont.

We're also SM6. Back ups we listed:
Woodcote
Greenshaw
Harris Purley (they allocate on ability bands, there's a test in early December, travel isn't too bad as there's a bus from Five Ways)
Carshalton Girls

We wanted to list Glenthorne, but travel was too difficult.

Plus the two grammar schools.

Our back ups are Carshalton Boys, Harris Morden, Harris Sutton Greenshaw. He'll definitely get one of our top 2 choices and I'm happy with those schools so I won't be too devastated if he doesn't pass the SET

Looked at Glethorne and Woodcote - both had about 5 application per place recently, and we may be just a bit too far from both of them in SM6.

Greenshaw open day is September 27th.

Who has seen Harris Academy Purley? I understood that their Saturday open morning was a ticketed event?
