Maths coordinator question

The coordinates of the 4 vertices of a quadrilateral are:
(a–3 , b) (a , b) (a–3 , b + 2) (a , b + 2)
What shape is this?
A kite
B parallelogram
C square
D rectangle
E trapezium


can anyone help me to solve this question please. Thanks in advance

I would suggest plotting it. Choose a point to be (a,b) [select actual coords if you need to, say (4, 4)] then plot. Post again if you need another hint.

Let origin be the coordinates (a, b) and add 2 and take away 3 so the shape would be a triangle.

I deliberately did not choose the origin as that gives negative co-ordinates.

How did you get a triangle from 4 points?

You can choose any values to (a, b), but if you choose smartly, it makes life easy. For example I choose a=3, b=0
It gives (0, 0) (3, 0) (0, 2) and (3, 2) which is a rectangle.

If you look at the X co ordinates two points lie on the same X co ordinate(a) and only differ in the Y co ordinate by 2 units. (b and b+2)
Similarly the remaining points have same X Co ordinate (a-3) and differ in y co ordinates by 2 units. (b and b+2)
Hence its a rectangle

Please note this question and my first response was posted two months ago ... we usually just try to give a hint and not the answer as that will not help with another question of a similar type.
