Grammar school commute

Post by tootingparent »

Hi all,

I live in the SW17 area. My son is in year 4 now and is tutoring at one of the centers near Sutton presently. He travels over the weekend and finds the commute tiresome. There isn't any grammar schools in tooting and the ones in Sutton are about 40 mins with 2 or 3 interchanges up to an hour's commute. At present , he is very interested in preparing for the grammar school and is fairing well. What are the commute options and if parents in similar situation have paired their kids with locals for commute ?I work full time and my DS will have to travel alone.I am looking at Sutton grammar, Wilsons and Tiffins boys. I am also in a dilemma if I should move home closer to the Sutton area if optimistically my DS gets a school and its easier for him.I heard the council now has a strict policy for move. I am also thinking if there are schools equally better in the tooting area and this whole grammar school thing is making me worried..Should I be preparing my son for this taking in to account the commute. Please advice.

Thanks

Graveney is an excellent school - if your DS is academic enough to get a GS place in Sutton he should also be able to achieve an ability place in Graveney. Bear in mind though that the Wandsworth exam is verbal and non-verbal reasoning whereas the Sutton schools test English and maths. Most parts of Tooting would be less than 30 mins walk to Graveney.

Personally I would rule out a commute that involves an interchange as it adds complexity and potentially delay to the journey. That said, I wouldn't worry about your DS having to travel alone - I don't know any secondary age children who get to school any other way.

With the Sutton schools, you will find out in October whether or not your son has qualified but you won't be told the score and you won't know whether your son has got a place until offer day in March. That only gives you six months to move closer to Sutton if you do get a place.

Clearing the outbox.

There is also a train from Tooting to Sutton Station, which is very close to SGS.

Bus 57 and 131 goes direct to Kingston for Tiffin School, feasible if your home is in its 10km catchment.

Also there is a bus 127 from Tooting to Wallington for Wallington Grammar for boys.
