Non Such Vs WHSG

Post by summer21 »

My DD got her result today and she secured good marks to secure the place for Non such or WHSG.
We are in catchment of both schools and distance wise WHSG is more nearer than non such.
Which one to put as 1st preference on CAF ????
We like both schools but somehow feel everybody talks more about Non such rather than WHSG.
Have got few friends daughters in both schools and both are happy. Which one to pick?

Does your daughter have any particular strengths or interests that pull her to either school? If you look at the extracurricular on offer and the GCSE options in the prospectus for each school, there are some differences. No guarantees they will be the same in a few years’ time of course, but Nonsuch offers astronomy for GCSE, while WG offers psychology, dance and media studies. The latter seems to have more options in general, but some are ‘twilight’ options after school as additional workload. They don’t seem to have as much of a focus on music as Nonsuch, but this is just from their website and it’s still likely to be good.

We are also in catchment for both and DD’s score guarantees her a place. She’ll be able to walk to Nonsuch, her interests align with their strengths/focus, and we know lots of happy girls there, so we’ll be putting that first. But we also know staff members at WG who are very happy there (which is a good indicator) and we generally got a good vibe from the school, so if the journey was better to WG, and nothing specific pulls them more to Nonsuch, I would choose WG.

Best of luck deciding!

Thank you Oneoftwothings for a good insight of the courses for GCSEs option. My one likes has an artistic inclination towards art and dance which I am not sure which school is better?

Best of luck to your daughter.

I believe dance (and drama) are stronger at WG... art is a tricky one - it looks to me like WG offer more choice but Nonsuch gets better results overall. WG get excellent results for photography comparatively but with much smaller numbers (I think this was a twilight option so that might explain that). Maybe you could look at the content of the art courses to see which currently suits your daughter more? Again, these things change though - for her and the school! But might help firm a decision.

Thanks for the share. Asking for my friend's DD. She got 330, but out of the catchment area. Are there chances for NonSuch?

Photography is still a twilight option at WHSG, as is Latin.

DD is in year 10 there and has chosen both music and art for her GCSEs, she's been well supported so far in both - due to art lessons having taken place in non-specialist classrooms/at home for much of the last 2 years, school have arranged a full day art workshop over half term for their exam students to upskill them in painting techniques.

For drama, there's (usually!) an annual school production which is generally exceptional, I've seen Legally Blonde, Guys & Dolls, this year they are rehearsing Midsummer Nights Dream. There are tons of music opportunities as extra-curricular, including groups started by the students themselves like the carnatic music group.

Good luck, whichever you decide.
