Conversion between Sutton Grammar and Wilsons scores

Post by dh28 »

This would help people who are trying to convert between Sutton Grammar and Wilsons scores.

Median Scores Example
The following case explains the scenario for a student who scored exactly median marks in all exams:

Stage 1 SET
SET maths restandardised (A): 100
SET English restandardised (B): 100
Stage 2
Maths standardised (C): 100
English standardised (D): 100

SGS Total stage 2 score: 60% of A + 60% of B + 90% of C + 90% of D = 300

Wilsons Total Stage 2 score: 50% of A + 50% of B + 200% of C + 200% of D = 500

Realistic Example
Here is an example with real numbers:

SET Stage 1 calculation
Stage 1 Maths raw : 47/50
Stage 1 English raw : 58/65

Maths standardised : 125.85
English standardised: 122.26

Total standardised: 248.11

SGS cut-off 213

Stage 2

SET maths restandardised (A) : 123.09 (Note that these marks are likely restandardised because there are roughly 900 children left (out of 3000) after sifting in SET Stage 1)
SET English restandardised (B): 123.18

Maths Stage 2 raw: 37/40
English Stage 2 raw: 145/150

Maths standardised (C): 123.96
English standardised (D): 137.17

SGS total stage 2 score: 60% of A + 60% of B + 90% of C + 90% of D = 382.78
Wilsons total stage 2 score: 50% of A + 50% of B + 200% of C + 200% of D = 645

To convert from SGS to Wilson or vice versa, you need the standardised scores for both stages, referred to as A, B, C, D in above calculations.
