Hi
now that the bulk of the Grammar tests are done, its time to concentrate on independents. Can anyone advise the best format / type of questions etc for CLSG ? There are a couple of sample exam papers on their website, but they look different to some of other ones we've been practicsing

Do we need to revise verbal reasoning, vocabulary etc?

According to the Admissions Booklet on the CLSG website:

Early January
The entrance exam will take place in early January.
There will be 2 papers – one English paper and one
Maths paper. There will not be a verbal or non-verbal
reasoning paper. The papers are based on work which
the girls will already be doing at their current schools in
English and Maths lessons. Sample papers are available
on the school website. There are no trick questions!

Did you look at the website before starting revising?

It is very clear that there is no Verbal reasoning.

The girls private schools all abandoned VR about 5 years.

Did you sit any of the state selectives?

City uses standard format English and Maths just like HBS and DAO.

Don't waste any time using anything else. Some applicants will know this format very well. DG

Slightly off topic, but I had heard the current head is leaving after this academic year from a student but I can’t find any announcements. Have current parents at City been informed? Or is it a misunderstanding by this student.

Hi thecatspjs! Another point, slightly at a tangent.

It's a while since we looked at these schools for our daughter in 2008-2010. But I was a little surprised to discover that they had only 69 girls taking A Levels in Summer 2017 (with 88 taking GCSEs). Their Sixth Form would be too small for us. Have you considered this in the longer term?

Nevertheless a fine school, with significant bursay support by current standards.

The girl's schools certainly didn't all abandon VR 5 years ago- the consortium schools have an element of it in their papers and others, including Wimbledon High, still have VR and NVR papers.

The North London Consortium Schools were just English and Maths but now they have abandoned English and Maths and gone to CEM and major focus on interview.

There are of course private schools who do use VR and NVR (St Francis in Letchworth is another example) but the top ones: City, NLCS, Habs, St Pauls, St Albans all got rid of their VR paper. DG

But still worth pointing out that a lot of the 'top' (in some peoples' views) south of the river still do do VR and NVR.

Standard format means that the student writes in the answers to the questions rather than selecting a Multiple choice answer. DG
