MERCHANT TAYLORS move forward their exam to WED 8TH DEC

Post by Daogroupie »

Merchant Taylors have sent email today to all those who have already registered for the Y7 exams to say they are moving forward their written exams to Wednesday 8th December. They have done this because of concerns over Covid 19, as last year they were forced to move at very late notice to online exams. They want to be able to go ahead with their written exams this year so feel that moving them forward is the sensible option.
Parents have one week (Monday 15th November at 6pm) to let the school know they wish to go ahead with the exam.
This will certainly benefit those who sat state school exams and have already done the preparation required over the summer holiday.
Those who were planning intensive prep over the xmas holidays are now going to be at a disadvantage.
This last minute move clearly shows that MTS really does not want to use online exams to decide their Y7 cohort.
This is in stark contrast to one of their major competitors HABS who have chosen not to return to the written format.
I am totally with MTS on this.
They must already know how their online Y7 cohort this year compares to previous years and this last minute change may well be a reflection of that outcome. DG

Do you know if we withdraw from application process (which is an option on their form) will we get the refund of £100 registration fees ?

Terms and Condotions...

Registration and admission: Applicants will be considered as candidates for admission and entry to the School when the registration form has been completed, returned to us together with a copy of your son’s birth certificate and passport and the non-returnable Registration Fee paid. Admission will be subject to the availability of a place and the Pupil and the Parents satisfying the admission requirements at the relevant time. Admission occurs when the Parents accept the offer of a place. Entry occurs on the date when the Pupil attends the School for the first time under these terms and conditions.

I suspect they are going to have to be a little lenient on refunds with changing the date like that - they could have changed it to anything

Being in the area and knowing boys who got into MT in each of the past few years, I don't think the "online cohort" was any different - because it wasn't actually an online exam like Habs Boys or the London Consortium of Girls' Schools.

MT emailed the paper out to parents a few minutes before the exam, and it was then completed on paper whilst being invigilated over Zoom. Thus the exam paper is now in the public domain, which is probably what they're trying to avoid doing this year!

Of course, it is possible to have a "written" online exam by loading the paper on to MS Forms or something similar - which Habs Girls did last year.

So did all of the parents have to print it out in that few minutes before the exam started?
That must have been very stressful.
Then when time was up did the parents have to scan it in and email it to MT?
Surely it would have been easy for the student to carry on working on the paper while that was being set up?
MT gives the circumstances of last year's exam as their reason for moving the exam forward this year so it does appear that they did not want a repeat of the situation. DG
