Our eldest son will (hopefully) go next academic year to a local independent school. My husband and I are grammar school teachers and therefore teachers wages and all that.... we have another son who is severely autistic. We are wondering if there are any charities that we could contact to assist us with fees for our eldest as his educational/social opportunities have been greatly diminished due to the circumstances of daily living with a severely autistic younger sibling.

The only charities I have come across tend to be for children of parents a specific occupation who can't afford the fees, there are some for clergy who often are elegible for bursaries too. I think many of the charities are fairly limited and much of the supoprt comes from the school itself.

Does your son get DLA? if so would that be cosidered to be his income rather than yours?

Have a word with Bougalou, she is a teacher and when her DD went to an independent school last year she managed to get a job there too. There are often generous staff discounts on fees at independent schools.

Yes my son gets DLA (high rate care and low rate mob) and I didn't realise it would not be counted as my income - thanks.

I have been looking for a job at this school but I doubt that it will happen very much as vacancies rarely come up at the school (I will keep looking though!)
