11 Plus Exams Forum

Has anyone taken exams for Chigwell Boys, Forest School Snaresbrook, Brancrofts School, City of London Boys or Brentwood School.

The issue is Do I let him sit all the exams in January or just a few.
Has anyone got any advise or material for these exams .

I only have experience of Brentwood school. The common entrance at 11 comprises 3 exams.

-Verbal reasoning (worth 25% of total marks) which is multiple choice and very similar to the ones they use for 11+ although they get a bit longer to complete the questions than in 11+.

-Maths (25%) which is really quite difficult- lots of strange problem solving- my daughter said she thought it was more difficult than the 11+ maths. 11+ practise maths would be good preparation

-English (50%) Which involves a comprehension with vocabulary (a bit like 11+ but the texts are a bit easier) a short piece of writing (usually continuing a story) and a longer essay/ story question. I am a primary school teacher and would have levelled the English comp at at least level 5 (National curriculum) Again- 11+ level work would be good prep for the test.

They also base offers on reports from present school. If the child is either borderline (ie the score they get does not match the school report) or they are considered good enough for academic scholarship, then an interview is also required.

If you register their name for the entrance test (which costs £70) they will send a pack with some past papers to practise.

why wouldn't you?

They are not all of the same standard in my opinion but I am going back 15 years when my brothers went to several of them.

A few people I know sent DC to all the schools listed. If you are going to prep them for 1 you may as well sit them all I guess. However, it is about 50 pounds per school - which is worth considering.
