Have you short listed any schools and do you have a girl or boy?

Generally most schools ask parents to first fill in a registration form and send it in with the registration fee, before a set deadline. Usually there's also a entrance exam but its contents vary depending on the school. Then there's an interview and you finally find out the results around march.

I think you will get more replies if you are more specific.

Son or daughter?
Co-ed or single sex?
Selective or not?
Financial aid required?
Age of entry?
Area?

etc....

Independent schools set their own entrance specs, so no two exams are the same. I'd look at the school nearest to you, make a shortlist of the ones you're interested in and then find out what they want. It can range from one exam to four, with or without an interview. Some have 10+ entry as well as 11+, some only have 13+, some have a linked prep, others have several feeder preps. Open days, visits, entrance exams are all at different times of the year - some do rolling open days frequently (e.g. Hampton) others do one and if you miss it, that's it.
