NLCS vs Tiffin Girls

My DD has got an offer from NLCS - it's a full fee paying offer (we don't qualify for a bursary)

She is also in HBS top 250 -our first choice of GS and our second preference of grammer school is Tiffin Girls where she has a good chance since her stage 1 results are pretty good and we are in the designated area for TGS.

With March 3rd looming close and having to accept or refuse the NLCS offer within a day of knowing which grammer school offer DD has got it would be wonderful to get some thoughts on NLCS vs Tiffins Girls.

Location is not an issue. We will move close to whichever school DD joins.

I have two nieces who both won places at HBS, NLCS and a string of other independent schools. They were also offered 50% scholarships at Channings and St Margarets in Hampstead. The parents heard from an ex-QE pupil, who had a sister at NLCS, that in a line up of girls from HBS and NLCS, he could immediately distinguish which school the girl was from. Apparently the NLCS girls exude confidence. Money wasn't that tight so the parents opted for NLCS for their able but definitely rather shy girls.

One is now at the end of her IB studies and the other in Y11. Both girls are now super self-confident, in a very measured manner. The girls are always full of praise for their school and the parents feel their hard-earned money has been very well spent.

Hmm. Some will say confident, some would say arrogant. We have a wide range of schools come and play our teams and some of the girls make a lot of loud derogatory comments which I know my dds would not dream of making in public Some of the parents also behave in a quite extraordinary manner. After 3.5 years of being forced to listen to this NLCS remain quite unrivalled champions. So if this is what being taught to be confident means give me HBS girls any day of the week. DG

One of the schools mentioned on this section (not as it happens NCLS or Tiffin) contains some young ladies I had the misfortune to run into on a holiday abroad a year or so ago. I wouldn't like to name the school but all I would say is they were so loud and shouty, rampaging round our hotel in the middle of the night, that I threatened to call their head teacher when we got home. I suppose as DAO says, one person's 'super-confident' is another person's 'unpleasantly gobby and arrogant'. There were some boys from another school staying at the hotel too and even they were hiding in their rooms! My children were really shocked (my son had to hide too because some scantily clad girls were pursuing him!) and opined that their parents were presumably paying thousands every year for them to turn out like this.

Motto: Confidence can be well overrated in my view, and there is something to be said for getting shyness back into fashion before shouty opinionated girls take over the world.

I don't think that either of my NLCS girls are arrogant- nor are their friends. They love their school and benefit enormously from the excellent teaching, high standards, great pastoral care, huge range of extra curricular opportunities on offer and diversity of girls. Every girl is supported and helped to find an area in which to excel. If they support each other loudly on the sidelines....well, that probably helps them to win so often!

Can you give an example of the bad behaviour you've experienced from pupils and parents from NLCS?

To be honest, in my experience its normally parents and pupils from the lower end of the social hierarchy who tend to be the most badly behaved at my son's football matches.

not sure what this has to do with NLCS? At any rate, whether NLCS, Habs or others, sometimes middle class parents can be (perhaps inadvertently) very offensive and generalise a bit more than is sensible. Your comment falls in this category.

That's interesting and I'm sorry for your experience with NLCS sports teams. My nieces and their friends are really quite civilised. I deliberately wrote, 'in a measured manner', in order to indicate that they are far from the stereotypical portrayal of "obnoxious indie girls" that many people seem to imagine.

It's quite wrong to confuse the self-confidence to take on challenges with arrogance. I certainly want my DC to be very self-confident, as I think this is an important factor in long-term success, and I would be horrified if they were remotely arrogant.

Quite frankly, adults and children from all cross-sections of wealth and educational background can be arrogant.
