Could I get some help on where to find past papers for the North London Consortium 1 and 2 from year 2000 onwards. My DD is applying to schools in both consortia. The websites of the individual schools have past papers, but only from years 2009 or 2010 onwards. Where could one get papers for 2008 and earlier. Any help is much appreciated.

The format would have changed during that time - even the individual schools would be unlikely to keep papers for that long. You would be better off looking at the most recent papers and then asking similar questions on other extracts; the opening pages of a wide range of children's novels is a good starting point.

There are more past consortium papers than for any other school. Habs girls and HBS and many other schools don't give you any at all and City and St Albans and NLCS are only giving you one.

The writing task changed this year so make sure you focus on that sample paper.

Where are you based? Are you planning to sit any other exams? DG

Persuasive writing has been added to the writing task. Are you sitting any of the state grammars? DG

Most indie 11+ tests follow a very similar format- a maths paper of about an hour, an english paper with comprehension and a short writing, and some also consist of a reasoning paper mostly verbal.

I think the amount of past or sample papers publicly available from all these various indie schools should be enough for any child to practice and experience, regardless of whichever school aimed for. Last time i counted in my download folder there were more than 50 complete tests' papers. I never used many of them at all. Should we really subject a child to more practice than that? Any more would be considered 'over tutoring.'

I have seen many over-tutored kids to struggle and fall behind once admitted in their indie schools.

There is no verbal reasoning paper for any of the North London private girls schools.

I do not believe in the myth of over preparing. Students in prep schools do past papers every day as the exams approach but nobody ever says that students who go to preparation schools are over prepared.

The more Maths and Comprehension papers you do the more likely you are to cope with the exams. Many very highly "able" students gained unexpectedly low marks in the recent Sutton mocks as it was their first experience in a timed situation in a large exam hall. One student I know of missed out two pages in the Maths but fortunately realised when checking and was able to do the pages and got a maths results in the 80's. Having this experience in a mock will mean this will not happen again in the real exam.

Doing papers with different formats really helps students to be able to cope with different formats. I would save most of the NLC papers until closer to January and use other papers. There are lots to choose from. DG
