Abbreviations for Independent Schools

A list of abbreviations for various independent schools commonly used on the forum.

Many thanks to "mad?" for getting the ball rolling with some of the London Schools. Please feel free to add to the list for any area and we will keep this first post updated.

London
CLSG: City of London School for Girls
G & L: Godolphin and Latymer
JAGS: James Allen's Girls School
KCS: Kings College Wimbledon
KGS: Kingston Grammar
LEH: Lady Eleanor Holles
LUS: Latymer Upper School
NHEHS: Notting Hill and Ealing High School
NLCS: North London Collegiate School
PHS: Putney High School
SHHS: South Hampstead High School
SHS: Surbiton High School 
SPGS: St. Paul's Girls' School
SPS: St Paul's School (boys)
UCS: University College School
WUS: Westminster (Upper or Under)

Also:
Birmingham:
KES: King Edward's School (Boys)
KEHS: King Edward's High School (Girls)

Yorkshire:
GSAL: Grammar School at Leeds
BGS: Bradford Grammar School

There is no "Upper" - that is called "The Great School"

North London/Herts schools seem underrepresented. Here are some of them:

MTS: Merchant Taylor’s School
SAS: St Albans School
STAGS: St Albans Girl School
HABS: Haberdashers Askes Boys School

STAGS is the state girls school in St Albans.

The private school is STAHS

If HABS is just the boys' school ('Haberdashers Askes Boys School'?), does that mean that the girls' is HAGS?

I think they thought about it and chose to name it Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls (HASG). :wink:

They changed it in the 1970s when they moved next door to the boys' school & it was pointed out to them :lol: :lol:

It is actually called HABS girls but the school itself tends to use the full name Haberdashers.

HAGS is not used by anyone unsurprisingly. DG

Manchester;
MGS- Manchester Grammar School ( boys)
MHSG- Manchester High School for Girls
WGS- Withington Girls' School

WGS might also be Wolverhampton Grammar School, if in the west mids rather than Manchester
