Re: NLC scrapping 11+?
You do realise that even as we type, the school is being besieged by parents wanting to know where to find such a bargain? If there are people around willing to pay £100 am hour, why sell yourself short?kenyancowgirl wrote:I'm sorry....£70 an hour??????? No wonder there are so many dodgy tutors out there if that is what they are charging! That is outrageous!
As for the interviews, one hopes that the schools have already had plenty of practice in weeding out those whose mummy and daddy have paid someone to teach them 'how to appear to be interesting'.
If they are talking about tests that are already used in schools, doesn't it sound more like CATS?

Thanks for the update but ouch! This new regime will suit my DD2 to a T but not DD1. DD1 will be part of the 1st cohort to sit this, her stronger subject is Maths and she may be shy in an interview.
Is Cognitive ability same as NVR, so VR & NVR only now? The Telegraph mentioned that in their report, I don't think it was in the Daily Fail.

'Untutorable VR'
One of the reasons that Tiffins dropped VR and NVR that these had become too tutorable and even parrots were able to perform well through over practice.

Untutorable VR is an Oxymoron!
I wonder what supplier they think they can use to deliver them this. CEM at first led with the "tutor proof" claim but now they have quietly dropped all mention of it. DG

In either of those papers, Cognitive Ability probably correlates rather neatly with the income of the family.ilelo wrote:Is Cognitive ability same as NVR, so VR & NVR only now? The Telegraph mentioned that in their report, I don't think it was in the Daily Fail.
In fact, if anyone developed a real test of CA, one that was ageless, classless and unrelated to educational experiences especially, they would get the Nobel prize. The short answer to this is that no one yet has. Maybe because it can't really be measured fairly, especially in children. Either way, there is more to this than desperate concern for the mental health of little ones (note timing of announcement - World Mental Health Day. 10 out of 10 for their PR department, at any rate).
Re: NLC scrapping 11+?
It doesn't matter what the new exam is like and how 'untutorable' the Heads think it is; there will be parents queueing up to pay tutors to get their dc through.
KCG if you think £70 is a lot, think again. Where I live tutors who 'specialise' in the private market charge £85 per hour and many dc have two or more sessions per week.
Anyway the exam is not the issue is it? it's the extremely worrying decline in young people's mental health. The increased pressure on dc, combined with the systematic decimation of CAMHS by the Tory ideology of austerity - and it IS an ideology - has created a hurricane. That's what this thread should be discussing.

Absolutely. And it is the same ideology which has turned education into a competition and replaced pedagogy with serial assessment. It is appalling and tragic for our children and I spend my life trying to oppose it.piggys wrote:. Every time untutorable is mentioned, they are proved wrong.

Re: NLC scrapping 11+?
A number of Independents schools have switched to an online 11+ exam which is similar to CEM and GL exams. This sounds as if it is going a similar route and they say it is untutorable...
Re: NLC scrapping 11+?
Interesting. My experience as a mum of a state primary daughter doing this last year was that she benefitted a lot form the focused preparation for the tests as she potential just wasn't tested by her primary. Whilst the Consortium papers were straightforward to prepare for, she learnt a lot of useful skills and probably did better than if it just relied on her primary reference. And more useful skills than practising CEM....
My other observation is that maybe this reflects that the situation is much less competitive for girls than for boys. For example, Channing said that they got 3-400 applicants for 80 places. If the offer:acceptance ratio is around 3:1, then this suggests that they may as well interview all applicants.
