Hello all,

Our son has been offered an interview at City of London School, but (coming from state sector) we know nobody else who has applied to City or who have sons there at the moment, and have no real insight into what the interview entails or how we should prepare.

The mail from the school said it would be a 15-minute interview with a teacher - which is fine - but "your son will spend an hour with us, during which time he will meet CLS teachers and boys, and his fellow applicants". Does anyone know whether this is for the applicant's benefit in choosing schools, or whether it's actually an assessment session? Info from anyone with recent experience of CLS interviews will be gratefully received.

Also... does anyone know the proportion of boys interviewed to actual offers?

It was 3 years ago now, but my son did like the group interview, they were there for lunch as well and he was able to get a good feel of the atmosphere of the school, he was invited to join in a football kick-about, and the first thing he said when I picked him up was that CLS was a happy school. And he still thinks that 3 years down the line. I might be wrong but I always thought that the unique atmosphere of CLS was down to this extra selection process, they can spot and exclude obvious trouble makers. I believe they over offer quite a bit, as most boys will have applied to 3 or 4 other schools, not to mention grammars.

Hi,
Our letter doesn't say how long the interview is. Wondering if different letters have gone out. Is yours a bursary application?

Hi. No, it's a normal, non music/sports, non-bursary application for 11+. Is that the same as yours?

Exact wording of the relevant part is: "Your son will spend an hour with us, during which time he will be able to meet teachers and boys from CLS, spend some time with his fellow applicants, and attend a 15 minute interview with a teacher [...] the whole session provides us with a great opportunity to get to know your son, and for him to learn about the school."
