Any experiences of Bolton Boys' School?

Hello there. I entered my son for the Bolton Boys' School entrance exam (Senior School) and applied for the bursary. He passed the exam and interview and was offered a place but I was not offered the bursary as all the funds have now been allocated.

At the time of applying I thought that if my son did not get offered the bursary, I would simply forget about Bolton School and let him go to our local comprehensive (which is not at all bad, graded 2 at last Ofsted). However, now he has been offered the place I am finding it difficult to send back the decline form! If he went there it would mean me remortgaging (I am a single parent) and the mortgage repayments would be very steep but I could probably do it cutting back in all other areas.

I would be interested in knowing other people's experiences of Bolton Boys' School. Has anyone on this forum experienced both Bolton School and a state school? Also on top of the fees, what extras can I realistically be expecting to have to pay for?

Thanks for reading.

Hi chomps

I know where you're coming from.

My son is in Y5 and is very bright. Went to the Parents Evening today and his teacher said that he is Bolton School material and he should have no problem getting in (or passing the exam).

I asked about the current Y6 and 6 kids passed their exam but only one got offered the bursary. The remaining 5 declined and are going to either Ladybridge or Hayward.

I'll be in the same boat next year, if and when my sons passes - i hope we get offered a bursary cause paying the full wak is a bit too much (especially as i've another son in Y2).

Which state school did you get offered?
