Hi,

There doesn't seem to be anyone in the Manchester section, so I thought I'd ask here.
Does anyone know what sort of pass mark is required for Manchester Grammar? I've heard that most indie exams have a much lower pass mark than the state grammars. How true is this?

DS passed two of the trafford grammar entrance exams. However, as we are out of catchment area, we won't know till march if a place is offered.

At the last minute decided to sit one independent school exam (as a very expensive plan B!)

Manchester Grammar is one of the most selective independent schools in the country so it is harder to get into than grammar schools, although I assume less apply. If your sons passed the grammar entrance though, there should be a good chance that he will get in, but in theory it won't be any easier for them to get into.

Manchester Grammar has changed its entrance exam format this year. An offer is based on how a child did on an assessment day, the entrance exam and current school report.

The entrance exam was much shorter than previous years but I presume still requires a similar percentage pass... I was just wondering what that might be. I'm guessing it's much higher than the 50% I've been told by someone.

I'd agree that Manchester Grammar is no walkover. I'd be surprised if it isn't more difficult than Trafford to get into - it's an excellent school.

I agree, it's one of the most selective independents in the country. Anyway, at least it's all over now....just the results to wait for!

The entrance test seems more fair and rounded now though. Did they not used to have one test and then invite a large number back for an even mre difficult test?

Zed 1, all I know is that when I bought the past papers from MGS the lady in admissions (who was very pleasant and helpful) told me that the pass mark was indeed around 50%. I find this hard to believe, but she said she also has a son there so I can only assume she knows what she's talking about.
By the way, I only got the papers as extra practice on harder papers-we live in London and I have a DD

Yes, previously everyone sat 'paper 1 maths' and then they invited fewer back for the second (more difficult problem solving) paper 2. This year all 4 papers were finished in one morning... which doesn't mean they were any less difficult!

Jess: Yes, I'd heard the pass mark was 50% too (still not sure if I believe this). There is very little info out there as to what pass mark is required. I presume tutors in the area may have a better idea but as we went down the DIY route we'll just have to wait and see.
