Variable - I think infants is more popular - children generally keener to show you their achievements!

Get to see them at parents' eve and when they bring them home for prep. Can also get as scheme of work from the school which is a great start.

My kids school has an 'open door' policy. Teachers are available both before and after school to talk to you, although if you need a long discussion it's probably better to book a time. Teachers never mind you looking at your childs books, although you may have to find them yourself - some in drawer, others in various piles according to subject. I took definite advantage of this in Y4 as I/teachers felt DD1 was not pulling her weight in class. A weekly inspection of DD's books by me made a massive improvement!
We do also have formal parent's evening twice a year when all books are available to parents.
Our kids school is small though, and all teachers, kids, parents etc all know one another. Not sure how the open door thing would work in a larger school - I had never realised what a closed shop some schools are
