Interesting what you say about writing them down, Mystery. My son can correct a mistake in spelling if he sees it but he can't always spell it correctly from his head.

That's the beauty of the snakes and ladders game, the child has to do the spelling and prevent the adult from progressing up the board, so there is no inequality, you don't have to pretend. It is amazing how viciously competitive even the meekest child becomes when they think they have it their power to stop the adult winning!How many times does the adult have to pretend not to be able to spell in this game?
You can use it for anything, I often have a stack of cards with multiplication or division facts on, weekly spellings or words to read. All you need is a snakes and ladders board and some questions.
I found the idea in a copy of special need smagazine ages ago and have been using it ever since.
