This whole business of yes there are sub-levels no there are not is so confusing for parents. The "pitch and expectations" documents seems to put sublevels in for level 2 but nothing else.

There might not be sub-levels, but if you sit an old paper and mark it properly, you must end up with some kind of score which indicates whether it's a high or a low level 2, 3 or 4 etc surely?

And don't appeal panels supposedly take sub-levels into account? And without them how do you see what rate of progress a child is making (and aren't OFSTED interested?) ?

I taught pre- national curriculum - yes I am officially ancient. Recently I tried to work out what was expected and when for KS3 maths. I thought it would be so straightforward with a national curriculum to guide me. I found it baffling. I printed loads of sheets from the maths section of the NC, but I still felt a little queasy.
