My son received level 5b in maths, 5 at reading , but 4c at writing.
I was seriously disappointed with his writing results , since he's been tutored for the last half a year and wrote endless amount of stories over that time (with our help though),
I wonder whether he will stand a chance of getting into North London grammar if his English does not improve. His comprehension is very good and maths excellent Have no idea what else I can do to imrove his writing skills. HE refuses to read anything, which is not factual or semi factual. Forget Wind in the willows or Treasure Island. Any ideas?

Read to him. Michael Morpurgo is usually a sure fire winner. And then, when he's gripped, miss an evening and let him carry on himself. Wait till he really is gripped though!!

Ask to see his writing paper, so that you can see exactly where he lost marks. You'll need his teacher to interpret the marking scheme.

Am I right in thinking he got his 4c in year 5? If so, remember that they are only supposed to get a 4b in year 6 - so he's well on target! And 2 5s in year 5 is absolutely brilliant!

Katel,
Thank you for words of support. I am just getting panicky the closer it gets. I somehow tend to think that kids have to be the best at everything to pass those often nasty tests. Also my son's best friend had three 5s. Try not to compare, but it's hard to resist :). The boys seem to have been competing with each other since kindergarden -not encouraged by parents by any means!! They would be better off splitting at the end of primary school-more healthy.
