SPAG tenses question

Post by JRM »

DD did a mock SPAG type test today. The question she got wrong was changing something to the present tense.

The text was: Michael spoke to John
The correct answer was: Michael speaks to John.

DD wrote: Michael is speaking to John.
I presume this is the present tense of: Michael was speaking to John.

Anyway, she can kind of see it, but I am having trouble delving into tenses at an appropriate level. Can anyone point me to a resource that can help her understand appropriately.

Thank you.

The present continuous is tricky. But I would have thought that it should be an acceptable answer.

The problem is that we also use the present continuous to indicate the future, e.g. Michael is speaking to John next week. DD is going to grammar school next year.

It was definitely wrong.
Maybe I stick with telling her that if there is a 'was' then she changes it to an 'is' and if there is only one word, she needs to replace it with only one word. I think she gets that, but I've been trying to work out if that works in every case.

Which paper is the question from?
I think your advice seems sound. The verb with ing is the present participle and can be used in a variety of different places.

I don't know whether it was a real paper. She is only year 5 so it doesn't really matter. But she asked and the teacher was adamant that it was wrong so I was wondering what 'rule book' they were getting that from. I don't think she knows more than past, present, future tense so I wondered if they are supposed to go into it more. I don't like not knowing!
