Yes - but the nature of school "maths" changes significantly too and those early judgements of "maths ability" are quite often based on skills in quickly counting objects accurately, trotting out number facts reliably and recognising numbers and operator signs as much as anything. There aren't many teachers in reception / KS1 who notice ability to grasp mathematical concepts - they don't have time apart from anything and it takes more time in a child that age as you're not going to see great problem solving ideas written down on the page if the child is still struggling to write a 2 and a 5 the write way round.
