Re: Sats Results 07/07/15
I read that this year there were more problems than usual because of a new electronic marking system. Is that right?
Re: Sats Results 07/07/15
Didn't notice any problems, we had 3 papers which had to be marked by hand, but rest scanned through OK.
Re: Sats Results 07/07/15
The electronic marking system had been used for grammar and level 6 papers since 2012. There were articles in the press where some markers had stated that they had difficulties. As some of them are octogenarians not the greatest surprise that change wasn't easy.
I sent back three papers for review as they are very close to the threshold. I don't expect reading to change though as the markers for English reading have access to a very detailed table showing what the best answer that doesn't score a mark looks like and what the worst answer that does score. These are put together with all the answers from the trial of over 1000 pupils.
Regarding why schools send the scripts off for marking review: 85% of children now have to score L4 in reading, writing and maths for the school not to be subject to the coasting definition (3 year rollling cycle). That is applied retrospectively to 2014 and next year the new standard will be equivalent to 4b for all and possibly 4a for maths. I have some classes with 10 special needs children - no hope for those cohorts! I've made it over the hurdle for this year and the school had for last year too. Next year will be much harder (one who joined this year could barely read and write) and the following year probably impossible.
The increased pressure on primary schools is ridiculous now.

I agree .Moved. We are a small 1 form entry school. 20 in year 6 this year , 22 last.
Last year we had a very high proportion of SEN children, who incidentally had all made greater than average progress, but they brought the overall attainment down. It was easy to see why, but rules is rules and all children develop at a steady unvarying pace..as any fule kno.

I will at least be able to provide a dialogue but with the change in system it is much harder to look at progress until the dust settles. No clues how to assess writing next year at secondary ready and no clues how to judge progress since year 2!
Hey ho - 3 years of below 85% and I'm sacked and replaced by someone who doesn't know my school as well.
