Anyone have any advice on oversubscribed schools?
One appeal failed, fingers crossed this one doesn't and hopefully will not have to wait that long for the answer.

Re: 11 + appeal spalding
Hi all, thank you for you kind words of support. I am sorry I have been away for a while, it really does hurt when rejected, but hay ho, I'm back.
Well my lovely daughter has not been her normal self since this horrid process started, she kept saying that she was stupid because she was unable to pass, well this morning was different, I am soooooo pleased to have her back. She was visited by her allocated school yesterday as with many of her friends, my daughter had not told them that her appeal was unsuccessful and so they were all sad and happy at the same time that she will be joining them. Her teacher gave her the biggest hug at school and she has bounced back.
What a very pround mum i am, she is now just looking forward to the challenges that secondary school will bring her.
You know, we never really looked at many other options for our daughter apart from grammer and our local comps, however there is a very good profroming arts school that is around 40 min drive from where we live, however this is out of cattchement and I'm not sure how to go about looking at it.
My daughter is fab at drama and attends dramer school, she is in a show in june, one of the main characters. I've been told that they are full so not sure if it is worth looking at. The problem I have is I do not want to disapoint her again. I beleive that they have to audition for a place if out of catchement, this we would have no problems with as she is very good, she auditioned for the part she is now playing, she is very confident with things like this.
Any suggestions?

Hi Kitty,
Are you thinking of Walton Girls' School in Grantham? There is no "audition" as such but there is a 10% entry on aptitude, which only comes into play if you are making an application at the normal time. If it is this school it is generally oversubscribed but there is a bit of movement after allocations and a very good success rate at appeal. I imagine that the block appeals for this year will either already have been heard or may be imminent but I know people were successful at late appeals held after the block last year.
If you were to decide to go ahead and investigate another school further you might ring the school first to ascertain the current position. Any application would still have to be made through the co-ordinated system by making a "revised application" to the LA - you would need to make sure you have first accepted your GF place so you do not lose it.
On a more practical note - would your daughter want to travel far away from her friends? How will the journey be for her - are you planning to drive for the whole of her school career? What are the cost implications? Have you actually seen the school in question? Is any performing arts specialism going to outweigh the problems of having to travel further? How would travelling affect what she is already doing outside school - etc, etc? There are a lot of considerations when choosing an out of area school!

Hi Alex,
It was springwood in kings lynn. To be honest it was just a thought, I think that for the time being we will just continue with our current school. The main thing that put me off as you have stated is the travel distance, at present I do work in kings lynn so this would have be acceptable. But like you say she would be away from her friends. I have spoken with her and she has decided to go with her friends and we will see how she get on.
Thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated.

Good to see you back Kitty!
We are now exploring options we hadn't previously considered, but with the understanding this will be DS's choice.
If DD wants to do a 40 minute each way journey and is happy for you to appeal then fine. On the other hand if she is happy to go to the allocated school, and it sounds like she is very happy now, I would let her go.
Good luck with your decision making

Money can't buy you happiness, but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery.
