We are appealing to a partially selective school in Herts on above grounds. Son was very ill and in hospital before test, missed 6 weeks of school and a time of test had been back to school for 2 weeks but still convalescing. We have obtained letter from Dr confirming illness and that wouldn't have been fully well at time of test. Also letter from school confirming he returned to school but lacked concentration, tired etc, level 5s prediticted & that was selected for G&T maths workshop. He is currently joint 3rd on waiting list, originally 8th so the shortfall in marks is not high. Is there anything more you would recommend we should provide and also what sort of questions are we likely to be asked in these circumstances. From what I have read it appears that even if panel accepts he might have got extra marks if the school is full it's tough luck. Any tips would be much appreciated.[/list]

I think the question you have to be prepared for from the panel is "why did you let your son sit the test when he was not fully fit?".

If there was no option to delay the test, then your extenuating circumstances are very strong, provided the academic evidence is also there.

However, if there was an option to delay you need to be prepared to explain why you decided to let him go ahead.

We did delay as long as possible and luckily provided a letter from our Doctor on the day of the test confirming the medical circustances. The only academic evidence we provided is a letter from the head confirming predicted levels and details of G&T workshop. Hopefully this will be enough.

What G&T workshop is your son enrolled in? The panel might be interested - is it the Summer course and on what subject? What is the school's specialist status? My son was on a G&T course and that strengthened our appeal and we actuaaly won it. Let me know.

Sounds good - is the doctor's letter on your son's file? Ring and check! If not, get a copy and submit it too.

Thanks for replies. G&T workshop was a one day course for Maths at another Herts school, I will ask teacher for more information.

The school is a Specialist Technology College with emphasis on Maths, Science, D&T and ICT. Son has just had marks for mock SATs and got a 5b(1mark off 5a) in Maths and a 5b for science. Don't know about English. In view of your comments and specialist areas of school do you think it would be worth asking the school to send a letter confirming these results?

That has got to be a most definite yes! Good Luck the more positive official documents you can get from school will surely help.

Yes definately obtain a letter on headed paper from school of predicted SATs results. If all 5s then that would be good.
