Appeal second thoughts

We've our appeal for Gs coming up soon. However,dh and possibly dc would prefer non - Gs ( he's been put in grammar stream). I feel I still need to do the appeal. If we succeed, I was planning to visit both schools once more to make a final decesion. Is that okay, or if we win, do we automatically get a Gs place, or do we have to reject one and choose the other? Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

Generally the results of appeals are made known to the Local Authority very quickly and if the school for which you are appealing was a higher preference on your CAF than the one at which you have a place then the LA will assume that you want it, will allocate it and release the place you currently hold. So, if you are not decided you need to contact the LA admissions department and let them know you are still deliberating; but bear in mind that you are not allowed to hold more than one place so you will need to make your decision very promptly.

PheasantChick says 'grammar school appeal' - singular - so this probably doesn't apply to her but some parents appeal for more than one school. The appeals are not heard in order of preference and the decision letters will also arrive separately. Many grammars are academies, so are their own Admissions Authority - and the clerk will usually only send the result of the appeal to the AA & the parents (to arrive at the same time) and not the LEA.

In these cases it is certainly possible to win more than one appeal and no appeals panel will know the outcome or deliberations of any other panel; indeed unless you tell them they won't know that you are having more than one appeal. It's then down to the parents to decide which place to accept. One unavoidable problem is that where more than one panel have allowed appeal for the same child, maybe on the grounds that the schools were over PAN but could cope with more children, the unused place that has been won will be left empty - appeals panels don't produce a 'waiting list' for those places.

Dear parents: if you're in the position of having more than one appeal for your child and you win the first appeal and this happens to be the school you want, please remember to withdraw your appeals for the other schools! It makes no difference to you (apart from not having to do more appeals :) ) but could result in another child winning an appeal.
