Eldest is at Wirral and middle will be doing 11+ imminently - format has changed so harder to work out how he is doing relative to his brother.

If he failed by a couple of marks, do you still apply to the school even though he hasn't "reached grammar school standard" and then appeal if he doesn't get in, or how does it work? Do you accept another place in the meantime on offer day? I am quite confused about this and Wirral and Cheshire (where we live) portals don't make it clear.

Not helped by the fact that we will be on holiday when results come out, so really need to be sure of situation so I can deal with it quickly and easily if worst happens!

If your DC doesn't qualify but you wish to appeal later you must put it on your CAF. If it's your first choice (or would be if your DC had qualified) then you should still put it down as your first choice.
On allocations day you will be allocated the school of your highest preference that is able to give you a place.
You must accept the place otherwise you run the risk of having no place at all, but you can go on the waiting lists for your higher preference schools. (Some areas do this automatically, some don't so check).
You can also appeal for any school you have been refused a place. See the appeals section for further info on this. It's quite comprehensive.

If your child doesn't quite make the mark you can still put the school first on the CAF and appeal against non qualification. Meantime accept the place you are offered this will not affect the appeal process and will ensure that you have a place.

Hopefully will be fine, but so difficult to gauge as the test is now so different to when his brother did it. Just have to wait and see - he seems quite laid back about it!
