Grounds for appeal?

Hi,
We received our daughter's results this weekend and she was unsuccessful. However, I wanted to ask whether Schools can ever be persuaded to show any flexibility? She passed the English and Verbal Reasoning tests by a wide margin (as she was unsuccessful her scores were included in the letter) but failed the Maths test by just one mark (81 against a pass mark of 82).
Is it worth trying to take this up with the School or is it normally a very black and white process?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
