Advice on appealing with an English Score of 141 (KENT)

Post by AnneofCleeves »

I am reposting here from the KENT board, as I see I might get more specialist advice.

Can anyone offer any advice about appeals.

DD got 141 in the English and over the overall pass mark(329) but bombed on the maths/ (83)- not a true reflection of her ability/doesn't test well in maths. , 118 in Maths Year 5 CAT scores, passed the medway (537 - maths was weakest again-90). School are very supported of appeal and agree that her mark is not a true reflection of her ability. At school greater depth in Maths, LEVEL 3 at KS1 SATS, 3rd in her class at end of year 5 maths assessments (allegedly, top girl at least 2 others in her class with lower end of year maths scores passed the 11 plus)

It did go to headteacher appeal, but there was not enough evidence in books of her ability (Her books show nothing but her getting work correct, I think she just hasn't been given enough challenge work to demonstrate in her book, other evidence would suggest this.) We think she just panicked in the exam. She told us before the results that she knew that she had failed because of the maths.

We are hoping to appeal to MGGS and Invicta. Having looked at the protracted journeys to Medway schools, I'm not sure this is the right choice for DD work/life balance wise.

I'm hoping the exceptional English Score will stand us in good stead. In our appeal should we heavily focus on her talent for English as a reason for them to uphold the appeal, as well as obviously, trying to show evidence that her maths is better than assessed? Or just focus on the maths evidence? Based on last year's figures only the top 0.7% got 141 in English the test. We would not be trying to suggest that her maths is at the same level, its not, but it is at a level good enough for grammar.

What evidence will help?

Any other advice warmly welcomed. Thanks
Etienne

No reason not to touch upon English, but as she had an overall pass, and a pass in English, the main priority clearly has to be to address the maths issue.

The best evidence would probably be a report from school in April saying that she has been making exceptional progress in the subject during Y6!
