Kent appeal - is 8 marks under too much?

Post by lovebugette »

We are situated in Kent and our son has passed VR with 130 (despite not finishing paper), NVR 123 and Maths 107. The Headteacher did appeal, but it was advised that our son's school books let him down.

The Head suggested we have a 60% chance at appeal, and we do have mitigating circumstances, so would appreciate any comments. A week before sitting the 11 plus, our house was hit by a tornado (yes, in Kent!) during the night and we suffered quite severe damage. Our son was lucky not to have been seriosuly hurt and this, we feel, did affect his perfomance on the day. We submitted a letter in advance of the test and our Head submitted this with his appeal, is it worth presenting this information at our appeal?

Thank you!

My comment, for what its worth?

I would look at all his past SATs result, if his educational history shows that he is a consistent good performer over the years, since his first Sats ,than this result would seem more of a blip.
The Head must think your son is Grammar potential or otherwise would not have appealed.

Also, my sons Head appeal was refused, but on the formal appeal no school books were looked at and he was offered a place.

My opinion would be that eight is not to far off at all, if his school results history is good.

Also might be worth askin the head for the next SATs prediction.

Good Luck

Dear lovebugette

If the head thinks you have a 60% chance, then it must be worth trying - but I'll say to you what I say to everyone: you must be prepared for the possibility of disappointment.

Yes, by all means mention the tornado, but it would have much more of an impact (:D) if the school would confirm that routine work was affected for a week or two afterwards!

If the link between the tornado and the 11+ is rather tenuous, then the best approach is to mention it very, very briefly but to downplay it.
