Hi, my daughter failed her 11 plus by 3 marks. The paper she failed on is Maths which ironically is her top subject. She failed to answer 8 questions due to her nerves and poor time management. I'm in the process of appealing and would really appreciate any advice. Her sister attends the Grammar School that we're appealing.

I understand. I'm completing the form that I need to fill inn outlining the reasons for my appeal. I have to 1st send this to the school as they have a different appeal process. I have put the following;

-Strongly supported by head teacher - please see enclosed documents
-Strongly supported by tutor - please see enclosed document
-I, and the school, and indeed DD herself feel that she is more than suitable to be considered for a Grammar school
placement and that she would have no trouble in achieving and maintaining the academic standard required
-Alternative CAT 4 scores of 124 for Maths
-Top group for Maths and English
- Bullying from a group of boys in year 5 had a detrimental affect on DD learning
-Social reasons: She will perform better in a single sex school that makes her feel less self-conscious
-Sibling link. Sister in year 11
-Travelling arrangements: Can travel with her sister to school

I am also going to be sending a more detailed letter with additional documents from the Head Teacher, CAT4 scores and
Tutor

I've cast my critical eye over this - not for the sake of being critical, but to give an idea of how your panel might possibly react. :)

The other scores weren't so good?

A high performing school?

- Bullying from a group of boys in year 5 had a detrimental affect on DD learning
Evidence of the detrimental effect?

Quote:
-Social reasons: She will perform better in a single sex school that makes her feel less self-conscious
Evidence that she is vulnerable in this regard? Would her current school support this statement? Is there any real substance to it? See the examples in:

-Travelling arrangements: Can travel with her sister to school
Does this matter at secondary school age?

I'm confused - you're sending two separate cases? The one above, and a more detailed one?

It may be in your attached documents, but why no mention above of what the school is predicting for KS2? (Are the predictions not particularly good?)
This is usually essential information:

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for all your help I really appreciate this. It's not 2 separate cases. The grammar school advised to send in a more detailed letter. Also have a document for the predicted KS2 and the predictions are very good. All CAT 4 scores were good. As far as traveling arrangements it would be helpful if DD can travel by bus with her sister (one bus ride), school allocated is 1.5hrs (4 changes of bus). The bullying made a big impact on name removed by moderator wellbeing, she had low self esteem and stopped eating

In which case these are important points and should be included above.

It's not easy to say what a good CAT score is for appeal purposes, although personally I'd have been comfortable with 124.

It wasn't clear above that this is linked with bullying, and there was no mention of supporting evidence.

The panel may enquire as to the likelihood of the bullies travelling in the same direction.

They are "the opposition" so (unless it was the clerk to the appeal panel) I'm not sure they should be advising you. :?
I accept, though, that the advice was well-intentioned.

What an appeal panel really wants to see is the supporting evidence.

The bullying happened in Year 5, the boys in question were in Year 6 and have now moved on to secondary schools. The classes (year 5 & 6) are together. They wouldn't be traveling on the same bus as they attend a school nearby
