Is Attitude to Learning grade important in Appeals

Hi

My son is in Year 5 and has just been given attidude to learning of 3 (normally 2s or 1) and the Deputy Headteacher made a flippant comment that the school would not support my son if there was an 11 plus appeal if he had a 3. My child's teacher is on long term sick leave and we have had so many supply teachers. We want to challenge this but I would be grateful if you could show me where to find out about this all? Thanks

Is this part of a school report to parents?
If you think it is unjustified, you could discuss with the headteacher.
As a last resort there is the school's formal complaints procedure.

If we're talking about headteacher recommendations for grammar school, rather than a school report, I don't think these recommendations are done until July - November.

They are only used in the event of a review or appeal.
A '3' for academic suitability might be a bit of a problem, but I'm not convinced that a '3' for attitude to work (= "output varies") would matter too much.

We won an appeal with a "3" for attitude so it is certainly possible.

His academic ability is great, good CATS but his motivation and therefore attitude has gone down since he has had supply teachers. The Deputy Head and another Head I spoke to at a different school said that if they have an attitude of learning of a 3 or 4 they will not be supported at Appeal by the School. This is part of a report that goes to parents. I just wondered what headteachers used to support puils?

I can see that there might sometimes be grounds for declining to state "Independent. Hardworking. Reliable" - but to withdraw all support for an appeal on this basis is not normal practice and would suggest one or two schools don't understand what is really required for appeal purposes.

They ought to focus on academic evidence.

I agree but for the Deputy Head to say that is both unprofessional and by the sounds of it unfounded. I am going to ask the Headteacher for clarification.
