Extenuating circumstances - foreign country diagnosis

Hello everyone!

First time here, so apologies if I am being redundant. We received the results for Gloucestershire grammars and unfortunately DS did not get the AQS. As we believe that we have strong reasons to support an appealing process, we are keen to move in this direction. We moved to the UK one year ago, so don’t fully understand this process and we are thinking about professional support. Is it worth? Could anyone please recommend such a professional?

Many thanks Etienne. I already read the post but I not feel confident as I still struggle with English. As I read that we can have someone to help during the panel, I tough to have someone experienced. What could be a good alternative? A teacher or the headmaster from his current school?

Ask in advance for an interpreter to be provided.
Alternatively, do you have a friend who speaks good English, and would be willing to accompany you?

Many heads and teachers won't attend appeals because, if they are seen to be supporting one pupil, they would feel under pressure to do it for everyone.

However, if his headmaster or teacher would be willing to attend, that would be great - but they would probably want to confine themselves to giving evidence about academic progress, rather than presenting the entire case for you.

Thank you Etienne. I will talk to his headmaster this Friday and check which is the best approach. Even if we can’t have someone from school in the panel, I know they will be very supportive.

Hello!

I have a very specific situation and kindly appreciate an opinion on how could I proceed. We moved to the UK one year ago and my DS that was under therapy (anxiety and OCD), stopped the treatment because he could not speak English. He learnt the language and for the +11 plus we didn’t mentioned his condition in the application, as we didn’t know if a diagnosis in another country would be considered. At the day of the test he didn’t perform at his best, as in this kind of situation he gets very anxious. We started to go to NHS in June this year and now they will authorise therapy in the UK.
As we believe that a grammar school is the right place for him (top performer in his current school here and specialised report of gifted and talented children in our country), we are keen to appeal. In this scenario, can we use evidences from our country, translated to English? Is it worthy also to include any other document of his special situation obtained in the UK post exam?

Hi Etienne! Thank you again for the support. I will start preparing my case and many things will need to be translated. We are still in doubt which order we will put in the CAF as we have twins and they have scored for different schools. DS1 that has OCD and didn’t perform at his best at 11+, achieved AQS to Crypt while DS2 is among the 150 for Pates and Crypt. We went to both open schools last Wednesday for the open morning and I talked to the admissions office in Pates. The talk was very disappointing as the officer was very defensive what makes me think that the chances are minimal even considering the circumstances (OCD and anxiety, gifted and talented with IQ 133, non English one year ago and now top achiever in his school).
What is really making me sad is that DS2 is refusing to go to a different school as he helps his brother in different ways. Both got AQS in another county (different schools again...) and I believe we will give up Pates and organize our case for this other county.
I believe that I will still need help until we finish this marathon. Your support and also forum member are much appreciated!
