appeal submittals

Post by regbosie »

thx all,

i 'm alittle confused Etienne, i thought if that i was on waitlist, then is it not an oversubscription appeal, and hence the reports etc.. even though dd passed the >111 pass mark...

how else should i view this appeal if not oversubscription? even though its for a grammar..

regards

Dear regbosie

The point I was trying to make is - others were talking at that point in the thread about academic evidence for a non-qualification appeal, whereas yours is clearly an appeal against oversubscription because you're on the waiting list (and have since confirmed that your daughter achieved a pass mark).

Because places for Slough GS have been allocated in rank order, I suppose you could be arguing that your daughter was expected to achieve an even higher score and "here is the academic evidence" - but I would be looking for something very specific, e.g. a high CAT NVR score from the school to show that the 11+ NVR score was lower than expected. I would not expect a report card, if the purpose of the report card is simply to show general academic ability. After all, the 11+ pass mark has already established your daughter's suitability for grammar school.

The test for an oversubscription appeal is whether your daughter's reasons for needing a place are so strong as to outweigh the prejudice to the school. See Q&As C2 for typical reasons. Take educational reasons, for example - if the school specialises in languages, and you have evidence that this is one of your daughter's strengths, isn't that the sort of case you should be making?

Hope this helps

Hi Regbosie

I understand your situation. We are also appealing for a place at a "super selective" grammar. Appeal seems to fall somewhere between non-qualification and over-subscription. We have taken advice and are approaching the appeal on the basis of:

1) Demonstrating that child is of very high academic ability (eg) school reports showing position within year in each subject and very positive comments from teachers. Look for SATS predictions or CAT scores. Letters of recommendation from head teacher may help.

2) Mitigating Circumstances - why child didn't perform to best of ability on day of tests. Again SATS predictions or CAT scores may back this up.

3) Why child needs a place at this particular school. Educational reasons; perhaps the school offers subjects not available at other schools in the area or specialises in an area very important to your child. You may have other reasons, travelling difficulties, siblings etc.

We were told to give a number of different reasons for appeal rather than focus specifically on one area, but that we needed to concentrate on academic evidence - no point arguing over-subscription at a super selective if a child falls well short of the cut off score for offering a place.

Hope I've understood your situation correctly and that this is of some help.

Good Luck!

Thx Etienne and Sams mum,

you're both right,i need to show that dd needs that particular school backed up by evidence that academically she is worthy and not a drain on resources and schools specialisation is a must that dd needs. hence report card/books/ recommends from head.
Any further suggests welcome
thx again
