11Plus Appeal - Slough -11plusmaze

Post by 11plusmaze »

Hi Etienne,

My DD has 110 in her slough grammar school exam. She got 131 in her Bucks. We live in hilligndon. So haven't got any grammar school offfers due to score / distance competition. My Son goes to Langley Grammar and that's our 1st choice. I would like to appeal to Langley Grammar for challenging the score , as well as on the grounds that my Daughter was looking fwd to joining the same school as her brother as she feels safe with him. There is also an element of Travelling involved which is going to be very challenging if every morning both kids have to travel in different direction. Unfortunalety we did not get offer for any of the schools on our list. There were 2 non grammar schools on the list but lost marginally by couple of hundred meters on distance on them as well.

The primary school is suportive and ready to provide ncessesaary academic evidence and school work. Could you please provide me guidance on the grounds for appeal , appeal wording and letter format from headteacher etc ?

Thanks a lot.

Hi 11plusmaze, am sure Etienne will be able to give you some advice - meantime have you had a look at the FAQ ? https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeals" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

you would probably need to look at non-qualification and oversubscription

are you also appealing / on the waiting list for the other schools on your CAF?

Thanks a Lot. Yes we have 2 from Slough - Langley / St Bernards. Beaconsfield and 2 other local school on the list. Will be apealing most likely for all. The last school on my list is a non Grammar (Swakeley Girls) but they do there on Non Verbal test and put students in Band 9 to 1 (9 being the highest) and then allocate roughly 10% places in every band. My DD is was in highest Band - Band 9 but that is also oversubscribed by 6 times or so. Will be apealing for Bucks and Local Grammar schools under Oversubsciption.

Good to hear that the school is supportive. Hermanmunster has already directed you to the Q&As. See, for example:
    • B48. We have spoken to the school and they are willing to support our appeal against non-qualification. As this is going to be new for them, they want to know what to put in their supporting letter.

https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appea ... aneous#e11" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Even if you can get over the academic hurdle, there's the problem of oversubscription.

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeal ... -school#c2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You face a logistical problem which many parents come up against when they have succeeded in getting their first child into a good out of area school, but things do not go so smoothly with the second child.
An appeal panel may or may not be sympathetic, depending on the circumstances.
Children of secondary school age would normally be expected to travel independently to school.
You write "my Daughter was looking fwd to joining the same school as her brother as she feels safe with him". Does this mean (a) she is a vulnerable child, and you have evidence that she would benefit from the support of her brother? Or does it mean (b) it would be nice if the two of them could travel together?
(a) would clearly make for a much stronger case than (b).

I've not seen any recent appeal statistics for Langley, but I suspect the success rate is not high.
Nevertheless, you must try.
Good luck!

Thanks Etienne / hermanmunster. Could you please signpost me to couple of samples of a good Headteacher / classteacher support letter. ?

Why not use the sample letter (oversubscription) which you can find in the Q&As, section C?
2. Any helpful info on differentiating factor / subjects that are taught in both these schools which i can use as to answer Why specific School ?
With regard to what is on offer at a particular school, the starting point is that only you can say what is important for your child. For example, does your child have an aptitude for music or some other subject, and do you have convincing evidence to back this up?
You then need to do your own research to establish which school would best meet your child's needs.
See examples A (music), B (SEN), C (maths/science) at the end of section C2(a) in the Q&As.
