Daisy,

We have just submitted our appeal today.

We raised 6 points as to why the school was suitable for our DD.

We didn't go into detail - just bullet pointed each one with a brief summary which we will then go into greater detail on the day.

It all fitted on one A4 sheet (just - with adjusting margins etc)

Hope thiis helps??

Snowdrops,

 That's funny about the margins as I keep adjusting mine and thinking "I wonder how much more I can get away with?!"

I'm now at nearly 2 pages, stretched margins and size 12 font!!

I shall try bullet pointing mine and see if that gets me anywhere! I keep re-reading it and editing it (the odd word here and there!) and just don't seem to be able to get it to be more concise!!

I wanted to try leaving size 10 font 'til the last minute too, just as a last push for a few extra lines spared!!

Hi everyone! Hope the nice weather has spread beyond our sleepy little town and you're all enjoying the sun!

When my fiance had the meeting with J's headteacher, she mentioned that St Benedict's was being extended to provide a sixth form and that we couldn't use the 'smaller school' arguement. However, after doing some reading I've found that if the final plans get approved (they were being submitted sometime in March 2009) the project wouldn't be ready to take new pupils until 2011 anyway. So it will still be a smaller school for when J makes the transition. This is right isn't it? Or am I missing something?

Hi Daisy, weather's not that great today, but hey ho, we have enough on our plates to keep us occupied otherwise don't we!!

How does the school you're appealing for compare with other schools, even with the extra numbers from the proposed 6th form?

You say that 'IF' the final plans are approved. That means they are not in place and cannot be guaranteed to happen - ie: they are as likely not to happen as they are to happen. Don't see how they can be brought into the argument on that basis.

I don't think it's for the HT to tell you what arguments to use, if you can make the numbers 'work' then go with it :)

Yep we certainly do have enough to be going on with!! Mind you it's been nice to see the sun today as I've had the blinds closed for two days because of a migraine

I believe there are currently 549 pupils on the roll at St Benedict's and 831 at The High School. St Benedict's are planning on taking an extra 200 children at sixth form level, which would mean there would still be less children at St Benedict's that there would be at The High School. And J would be going into Year 9 if it happened, so he would be settled, and he gets on with other people anyway so I can't see it being an issue at all. I always get the feeling the HT is just fobbing us off all the time!

It does appear that the plans for the extension aren't finalised! :D

Yay!! Letter from the Maths tutor J. had...

Dear Sirs

J's Appeal for a place at St Benedict's

I worked as a tutor in mathematics for J, for a period of about 3 months. During this period J worked extremely hard and demonstrated a real aptitude for mathematics.

The work plan I developed for J was based on Key Stage 3 (year 9), GCSE Foundation level (year 11) questions and the work he was undertaking at school. Nothing was outside his abilities and he was keen to expand and develop his skills in Mathematics.

J seems to thrive on a challenge and wants to be stretched in his learning.

I believe his entry to St Benedict's High School will enable J to continue to develop and to be a real asset to the school.

Yours truly..............

I think that should certainly help at the appeal with the fact that St Benedict's is a maths specialist college! Thank you Mr Maths Man!!!

Hi Etienne

When you say the D of E below do you mean Department of Education?! Sorry, am having a blank moment!!!!
Yes, but just as you are providing the evidence for Maths, try wherever possible to show that there is real substance to your point. For example, ask the Scouts if they will write a letter of support, saying how well-suited J. would be to the D of E that is on offer at St. B's.

Yes, I'm just referring to what Daisy quoted earlier:
A great many pupils participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
