cem tests

A quick question: when did CEM take over the 11+ test in Warks?

Delving into the bowels of the Warwickshire forum, it would appear that CEM took over in 2008 i.e. the test for 2009 entry, although I couldn't make out whether that was for the whole of Warks (did the schools used to test separately?).

October 2008 for September 2009 entry - this applied to all of Warwickshire.

The Warwickshire 11+ was a Moray House test up to and including 2006 for 2007 entry. Apparently there were only about 8 papers that they used to rotate. Inevitably tutors and a certain school that rhymes with loft got hold of the papers and there was a scandal where many of their pupils scored 100%:

After that there was a single year of NFER in 2007, before it moved to CEM in 2008.

And, funnily enough, I understand the numbers accessing from "the attic" have dropped to single figures ever since! The test now is supposed to be tutor proof - you can certainly practice NVR/VR and maths and that is helpful. It tends to use 5/10/15 minute chunks, chopping and changing so that children don't have time to get into a "maths" zone or an English "zone". The three areas (divided into two papers with sub sections that are timed as described before) were equally rated, until this year, which gave an advantage to the more mathematically minded children, but this year the NVR/Numeracy total was averaged and then combined with the score for VR. My son is working on S&S Level 6 mental maths at school and didn't find the maths level too challenging. The NVR was not difficult but was time challenging (he didn't get a chance to answer the last 7 but as it was multiple choice, banged down guess for each one) and bits of the VR were really tough - this is similar to feedback that we got from other candidates from different schools. Practising NVR is quite a good way of picking up marks, imo.

Out of interest, has it been known for any single school to achieve an 80% pass mark for the cem in the Midlands when less than 5% from the school did not enter?
