The priority area is irrelevant for the w/l though, as the w/l is purely in rank/score order. The priority area only comes into play for the w/l where there is more than one candidate on the same score - at this point they will be ranked according to distance, with the nearest candidate on the same score being ranked lower (ie with a lower ranking, therefore "better") than someone further away - so all those girls on 218 will have different ranks, depending on where they live.

How do they work that one, then? Waiting lists are meant to be maintained in oversubscription criteria order until the end of December. So if all applicants living in area X are ranked above anyone not living in area X for the initial allocations, anyone legitimately joining the waiting list, who lives in area X, would be placed ahead of all those who don't, regardless of score? Unless there is a car on the number to be admitted from area X (as there is with IC applicants to our local grammar schools).

The priority area is only there for the first round of allocation, at which point it is purely score based (so out of area candidates are then considered in strict score order, ditto late candidates are added in in score order.) Distance is the next criteria - so a closer candidate on the same score would be ahead....the priority circle is a 17 mile circle drawn round a central point in Strat (in effect that means that someone in the priority area on 218 on the w/l would be ahead of someone on the same score who lived outside the priority area but purely because of the distance, not the fact that they lived in area X....I phrased it clumsily!!

So this year, the waiting list comprised those that didn't provide proof of address on time and late applicants moving into the priority area (this year there were 9) followed by out of area candidates (ranked by score) and then those that scored below the AQS (ranked by score). I hope that helps.

Just called the Admissions and now my son has moved to WL#1 in KES..its definately moving faster in last 2 /3 days. I am now calling everyday this week as believe all pending cases have been now spoken for. Really hopeful as he is keen on KES. Hope this helps!!

I’m confused now. Schools blurb on waiting lists does say the lists will be held in criteria order. Link to SGGS for example.

If the waiting list isn't ranked in the same order as the criteria used to make the allocations (properly, that is ) on March 1st, then the admissions authority concerned is in contravention of the Admissions Code. Hence my confusion at the statement that the priority area etc no longer matters. de facto, I suppose that might be the case,if the initial allocation has already dealt with all but the bottom category of applicants and no-one in any higher (by some criterion other than score) category ever joins the list, but if a child in, say, category 'having achieved a pass score and living within x miles of the school' joins the waiting list, the Admissions Code says that they join it above the person in category 'all other applicants, in score order', even if their 'pass' score is significantly lower.

(Unless, as in our local case, the 'living near' category is limited to a certain maximum, but in that case, there would have to be a split waiting list anyway as the 'near' candidate could only have a vacant 'near' space, not an 'any other' space, were it to come up first).

Don't worry - I think I'm just getting myself confused....The AQS is generally set around PAN when (effectively) both in and out of area candidates are ranked, separately. This means that in the main the highest scorers are accepted. Below this is a minimum score to be allowed to sit on the waiting list - Sorry long day...
