2020 Entry / 2019 Exam

Hi there,

This is my second time around on here, DD is in year 8 at Rugby High and loves it, DS is in year 5.
After looking round schools a year early he is wanting Lawrence Sheriff so is going to be sitting the 11+ in September 2019 for entry the following year. We looked round early as I wasn't so sure he would want to do any extra work but it is his decision and he definitely wants to.
He has always read but he is spending more time reading with us, his main downfall is his spelling, he can learn words for spelling tests but then instantly forgets them once the test has finished, his spelling in class is fairly awful on even basic words and his previous teacher laminated a sheet of words for him to help but I'm not sure how much improvement there was. Does anyone have any tips on how to help him with his spellings? He is great at comprehension but clearly less so at SPAG, maths he is working at greater depth and he has a good grasp of his time tables at speed so I am not so concerned on that side, we didn't touch on NVR with DD until summer and I'll probably wait with him too so for now my main "concern" is spelling and keeping it in his head!

I am sorry I don't have an answer but wanted to suggest you post this in either the general 11+ forum or English where you might get some more traffic.

Thanks :)
I spoke to a teacher yesterday and mentioned my concerns, she suggested he learnt spelling rules rather than individual words so I now have a flip chart of rules which he seemed excited about last night. Hopefully we will manage to spend a little time this weekend having a look through it and make a start on improving his ability to spell.
