that's interesting - is timetable on their website? My DC no knowledge of anything other than VR either so I guess it will be a very honest assessment, especially for those who've never done CatsMidget Man wrote:Not sure if they stream or not but from the timetable it state's they are Midyis tested , from which I gather is non-vr, vr etc like a CATs test? Midget has no knowledge on anything other than vr at present

My DS was MidYIS tested in the autumn term of year 7 at his Indie school. They have not used the results to stream the classes - they will be partially streamed in year 8 and fully in year 9.
At DS's school they use MidYIS testing to find out where the child is and what their potential is. The tests can highlight any discrepancies and a good school will then address these.
To give you an idea of what the tests comprise these were DS's results (percentiles and stanine scores are from a national population sample spanning 10 years if I remember correctly):
- IQ score of 120 (91st %ile)
- MidYIS NVR score of 122 (standardised - top 6% of population), Band A, stanine 8
- MidYIS Skills score of 107 (standardised - top 30% of population), Band B, stanine 6
- MidYIS vocabulary and maths scores of 102 & 103 (just above average), Band B, stanine 5
- Overall : standard score = 110, Band B, stanine 6, percentile 74
There is a 20 point difference between his NVR and 'Vocab' tests. It is unusual to have more than a 15 point difference between NVR and VR-type tests.
School have been brilliant, readily sharing and discussing DS's scores. they had obviously spent time analysing them and thinking about DS's performance in normal class tests. I think the NVR score surprised them and they have assured us that DS will be stretched, encouraged, enabled to improve in maths and 'vocab' whereas they might not have bothered so much without the MidYIS test result, thinking that he was a 'just above average' child.
They said at the time that given the high NVR score, DS ought to be doing better, particularly in maths - which is what I have been saying since year 5. Since then his maths teacher seems to have been identifying and filling in gaps (from primary) and DS seems to have more confidence int his subject now - we'll see if his performance has improved in summer subject exams.
The above is taken from a post I made on here when we received DS's MidYIS results and Sally-Anne was very very helpful on the thread if you fancy a read:

My DS wasn't particularly bothered either way to be honest. But I personally could have done without the SATS papers he had to complete over the Easter holidays. The funniest thing I heard was when the headteacher told us that Y6 had acted in a mature way, when they were told SATS were off. Yeah right !!!!
MY DS's school doing Sats this week. After all the focus this yr on them i'm glad they are but if grammars take no notice of them then it's of no benefit to him! Having said that he isn't phased about it.
I know of some MK schools not doing Sats officially but they will do Sats tests (not this years) under test conditions and give DCs results, but withhold figures from LA.

My DD's school is boycotting, having practised for them for months, some kids have had to go to booster classes after school tp prepare for them The children are sitting exams this week, but they are internal exams, marked by the teacher and are only for the school to record their progress.
