Thanks Yoyo. Reading through these posts I'm feeling even guiltier, if that's possible. I guess we all try to make the best decisions for out DCs. DS has settled in well and by no means travels the furthest, but the latter is small consolation :( Please don't let Amber come in and tell me off. )

My DD leaves home for the school bus at 7:15am and gets home anytime from 4:30pm to 5:15pm (dependant on traffic!)

The Abba song, Slipping Through my Fingers, comes to mind regularly! Especially the verse ... "Schoolbag in hand, she (he) leaves home in the early morning; waving goodbye with an absent minded smile .... the feeling that I'm loosing her (him) forever and without really entering her (his) world ... slipping through my fingers all the time ..."

DD leaves the house at 8:30am she arrives at school at 8:32am, she is normally home by 3:45 (school ends at 3:40) but if she has a match she sometimes doesn't get home until after 6.
In year 7 she hated living so close to school as she felt she missed out on some of the socialising, but she now sees the benefit especially when carrying lots or when the weather is bad.
DS leaves the house at 8:00am and arrives at school at 8:05 :?: :?: (he plays rugby/cricket anything that can do maximum damage to his school shoes I think! :D )
The traffic where we live is appalling at school pick up time and I am constantly bemused by why so many parents feel the need to pick up their little darlings from the school door (disabilities/injurys aside of course) but the benefits of being local far outweigh the negatives - I think I'll move to the country when they've all flown the nest though! :D :D

Just found this. Am I the resident ogre then? Sorry.

My children get up at 2am, eat a breakfast of thin gruel, walk 5 miles and then catch 3 buses and a train, arriving at school just in time for the bell at 9. They are usually home by midnight; they then do their homework, sort out the chickens, do the ironing; and time permitting, might be allowed to eat some slightly thicker gruel before going to bed. At the weekends, we relax the regime a little and let them lie in till 4am; and they get extra gruel at lunchtime.

Does that make you feel better?

My DS leaves the house at 07.30 , gets dropped off at coach stop by DH. In the evening apart from Fri which is an hour earlier he gets home at 6.20. School doesn't finish until 5.30 as it is an indie which used to do Sat morning school. It's a long day, but they get very long holidays- he now has a 2 week half-term holiday!
I think if your DC love their schools, a little longer travelling does them no harm. In my DS's case the coach trip is a social event and judging by the background noise when I ring him- a good time is had by all(except the coach driver!  )
